Palisades’ Thomas Smigo sets record, wins Colonial titles

Palisades’ Thomas Smigo set a new league record in the 3,200 meter-run at last week’s Colonial League track and field championships.

In addition to his gold medal in the 3,200 (9:27.89), Smigo also finished first in the 1,600 (4:24.55) and claimed silver in the 800 (2:00.54).

Smigo was also a member of the boys 4x400 relay team (Bryce Guthier, Mitch Campbell and Hugh Salva), who finished fourth in a time of 3:32.85.

Guthier took home third place in the boys 300 hurdles (41.83) while Dean Bartels captured silver in the boys javelin (151-08), bronze in the boys discus (126-04) and finished fourth in the boys shot put (45-10.5) behind bronze medalist teammate Nate Carr (45-11.5).

The boys finished fourth overall as a team (80.33 points).

Several girls also claimed medals for the Pirates.

Amelia Smith won bronze in the girls 800 (2:27.71). The girls 4x800 relay team of Smith, Sara Reguera, Brynn Chilton and Charlotte Houghton finished third (10:14.44).

The girls 4x100 relay team of Jenna Magditch, Angela Henry, Holly Pason and Kaylei Gruver captured bronze and the 4x400 relay team of Houghton, Henry, Pason and Gruver raced to second place.

Paige Casterline finished second in the girls high jump (5-01) and fourth in the girls long jump (16-01.75) while teammate Kateln Shoemaker nabbed silver in the girls javelin (111-09) and third in the girls discus (94-05). Jillian Schulz brought home bronze in the javelin (91.07).

The girls team finished in third place overall (75 points).
