Nockamixon concludes three-phase tax increase; moves toward web upgrade

Posted

Concluding a three-phase tax increase it began in 2021, Nockamixon Township is including a one-third mill increase for its 2023 budget, bringing the tax rate to 7 mills. The action was taken by a unanimous vote of the board of supervisors at their Nov. 17 public meeting.

The one-third mill increases in 2021 and 2022, and now for 2023, were cited as needed for increased support for fire service, which was the same need cited for the last tax increase, in 2009. Township Treasurer Keith DeLuca said the 2023 budget featured operating with a “$150-200,000 surplus, as it has each year for the last 11 to 12 years.”

Also at the Nov. 17 meeting, supervisors conducted a discussion with DeLuca on alternative vendors for providing a major upgrade for the township website. They concluded with unanimous authorization to move forward with the project, in a development stage over the next several months, and then continuing on a monthly service basis with the selected vendor. Officials had received numerous complaints from residents about the existing website.

In addition at the meeting, following a presentation by Scott Mease of Mease Engineering in Quakertown, supervisors approved preliminary/final land development for the 6-acre Duff property on Brownstone Road.

The proposal features a 45,000-square-foot warehouse, to be used for storage of “restored vehicles.” Discussion included online participation by Township Engineer Steve Baluh of Wynne Associates in Quakertown, whose detailed review of the proposal was featured.

Along with various needs cited by Baluh, approval was granted with assurance of further consideration in the event the property changed ownership, with any different use of the warehouse, such as need for parking not now needed, and potentially impacting the neighborhood.

Supervisors accepted the resignation of long-serving township Emergency Services Committee Chair Ed Mocarsi, who also presented a candidate from his committee to replace him. Supervisors also entertained a presentation by a candidate from Palisades Fire and Rescue.
