New cartoon book by local cartoonist and comedian

Posted

Illustrator Pat Achilles of Doylestown and her son Tom Achilles of Brooklyn, N.Y., have collaborated on a book of gag cartoons titled “Zeitgeist Meetup,” and will be signing copies at The Mercantile, 444 N. Main St., Doylestown, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.

The self-published book was created long-distance over the last year as Tom wrote cartoon ideas in New York City and sent them to Pat, who drew them here in Bucks County.

“Tom’s cartoon ideas have a young, New York-type vibe,” said Pat. “He works and does standup around NYC, so some of the ideas come from his everyday experiences, but with a humorous twist. Our book riffs on all sorts of topics that are in the ‘zeitgeist’ right now—but it’s all in good fun. We want people to laugh!”

Pat has been a professional illustrator for over 30 years and has had cartoons published in the “New Yorker” magazine. Two of her cartoons appear in the “2023 New Yorker Day-to-Day Calendar.”

Tom has been involved in comedy for over 15 years, leading an improv comedy group when he attended Holicong Middle School and CB East, and doing standup regularly since moving to New York City to work for New York University.

Pat will also have her humorous holiday greeting cards for sale at the event. There is a parking lot in the Doylestown Shopping Center, where the Mercantile is located, and many other unique gift items in the store. Information on “Zeitgeist Meetup” is at AchillesPortfolio.com.
