Joshua Arruda of Morrisville won the $5,000 top prize for first place at the McDaniel College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Challenge on April 21.

Arruda also got $1,000 as the People’s Choice winner. He is a senior accounting, economics, and business administration triple major at McDaniel.

Five student teams competed at the event by presenting their entrepreneurial ideas and products to a panel of experts. In addition to the $5,000 top prize, other cash prizes included $1,000 for the runner-up, $1,000 for the People’s Choice, and $1,000 for the Community Changer.

Arruda presented HiQ Basketball. HiQ Basketball is a subscription service for youth athletes, leveraging existing online platforms, to deliver basketball IQ training at basketball camps and to individuals.

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Challenge is part of McDaniel College’s Program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, an academic program open to students in any major that is aimed at developing core entrepreneurial skills. Through the program, students have access to the entrepreneur-in-residence, alumni connections, mini grants, and other events like the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Challenge. McDaniel students can also choose to minor in entrepreneurship or major or minor in marketing.
