Montgomery County Senior softball league presents donation to Souderton’s Keystone Opportunity Center

Posted

The Montgomery County Senior Softball League (MCSSL), now in its 23rd year of existence, has designated Souderton’s Keystone Opportunity Center as this year’s recipient of its annual charity contribution.
One of the area’s senior activity organizations, the MCSSL’s membership currently has over 200 senior softballers age 60 and over. The MCSSL’s home is established in Hatfield at School Road Park, where the league plays a summer season between April and October. The league also plays a winter season indoors at the XL Sports World in Hatfield from January through March.
One of the league’s objectives each year is to give back to the communities, and its members annually raise money for local deserving organizations through tournament events and donations.
The MCSSL began way back in 1999 when a handful of “old-time softballers” decided to get together in a local field and play some softball. The idea continued to grow as more and more seniors discovered how much fun it was, and within a year a league was formed. The league quickly grew into a sanctioned organization and set itself up to play under the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) rules for senior softball.
By 2015, the organization had grown to where it sported over 200 players participating in both summer and winter seasons. The members recognized their good fortune over the preceding years, and decided it was time to give something back to the community.

The MCSSL’s annual charity endeavor was born. Each year monies have been raised through league activities, such as its annual league softball tournament, annual golf outing, collection and sale of used golf balls, and personal donations. Local recipients in the past have included a volunteer medical corps, a police benevolent fund, a veteran’s association, a scholarship fund, a youth organization, and in 2020 a local food bank to help families in need. In addition, the league also annually hosts a Phillies Ball Girls Charity event, where our senior team plays against this group of extremely talented young lady softballers.
The continuing COVID pandemic in 2021 reminded the membership that there are still many local families in need of help.
The Keystone organization reaches out to families in need throughout both Bucks and Montgomery counties. It was designated as this year’s recipient based on its many programs to provide not only food and meals, but for providing management programs to help residents meet rental and housing cost obligations, and programs to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Monetary donations received this year once again exceeded expectations, and totaled just over $4,300.
