“Screentime consultant” to speak at Buckingham Friends School

Posted

Buckingham Friends School in Lahaska will host two upcoming workshops for the school’s faculty and parents and guardians on teaching and parenting in the Digital Age, both happening on Wednesday, April 10.

The event will feature guest speaker Emily Cherkin, who is also known as, “The Screentime Consultant.” As part of her evening workshop, “Becoming a Tech-Intentional Parent: Parenting in the Digital Age,” Cherkin will provide insight and helpful tools for BFS parents to utilize when fostering healthier habits for children and navigating the digital world.

During her presentations, Cherkin will discuss best practices for managing screen time and ways to promote responsible technology use among children. Parents and guardians and faculty members will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session and open discussion with Cherkin, providing attendees the opportunity to ask questions revolving around child development and excessive technology use while also learning techniques about how to implement healthy boundaries when allowing children to use technology every day specifically social media and internet use among pre-teens and adolescents.

Cherkin is a nationally recognized “screentime consultant” who has expertise in educating educators and parents and guardians about the risks and solutions surrounding children’s exposure to today’s evolving digital world. The Seattle, Wash., native taught middle school for twelve years before she began her work in media literacy. As a mother of two (ages 12 and 16), she was inspired to help provide other parents with valuable knowledge and recommendations to help diminish concerns around excessive media consumption for children.

Her work has been recognized in major news outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR. She has also been a guest on “Good Morning America,” and appeared twice on “The Today Show.”

Cherkin also released her new book, “The Screentime Solution: A Judgment-Free Guide to Becoming a Tech-Intentional Family,” in January, and it has become an Amazon bestseller.
