Main Street Gallery showing emerging and established artists

Posted

Beginning April 2, Main Street Gallery in Quakertown is holding an “Emerging and Established Artists of Buck County” exhibition featuring “a provocative mix of acclaimed emerging and established artists from the region.”
Until recently the gallery, run by Jim Lukens, featured solely his artwork plus one or two others that didn’t compete in style or medium. However, from inception, Lukens envisioned the gallery as a signal of change and cultural revitalization in Quakertown.
To facilitate his vision, Lukens is opening the gallery to more than a dozen artists chosen by him for a variety of reasons including their uniqueness and representativeness of the transformative work to which the region is home. Most are from the Upper Bucks area and showing locally for the first time there.
“The majority of work here will remain mine, but I’m excited to have the opportunity to share their voice and to provide a venue where they can form their own relationship and have a ground floor to build a solid future,” Lukens said.
He also credits McCoole’s owner Jan Hench for being a steadfast supporter of the visual and performing arts; for helping him launch the Main Street Gallery, and providing a venue to showcase emerging artists in the region.
Another goal of the show, Lukens said, is, “I want to make art accessible to everyone.”

His nationally known oil paintings, many of which are completed en plein air, or outdoors, harken back to Pennsylvania Impressionists from the turn of 20th century.
Alongside his works, Lukens has curated a show that encompasses a variety of conventional and unconventional mediums and styles. They include abstract paintings by Jennifer Leonard and Judy Silver, wood block prints by Dean Thomas, abstract watercolors by Katie Heffelfinger, and postindustrial sculptures by Lorenzo Branco, Deirdre Doyle and Jerry Hertz.
Work by these and a half-dozen other established and emerging Bucks County artists are on display at Main Street Gallery for the month of April. The show will kick off with an opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 2, followed by a month of artists’ talks and demonstrations at the gallery.
Main Street Gallery, at 1236 W. Broad St., Quakertown, at the corner of Main and Broad streets, is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or just about any time with advance notice, with free parking nearby.
