Local Jewish women’s organization receives education excellence award

Posted

Barbara Nussbaum, president of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Greater Philadelphia Section, was the keynote speaker at the seventh annual Educators’ Luncheon of the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center (HAMEC) May 2, at Philmont Country Club.

She accepted the third annual Excellence in Education Award on behalf of NCJW in recognition of the organization’s “leadership, dedication and outstanding contributions to advocating for and promoting the fields of Holocaust studies and education.”

Nussbaum’s presentation was “The Diversity of NCJW: No Future Without Remembering the Past.”

NCJW has provided volunteers for many years to HAMEC’s “Witness to History” project, which provides Holocaust survivors as speakers at Philadelphia-area schools and community organizations. NCJW also sponsors a yearly Holocaust Student Essay Contest at Philadelphia and suburban middle schools.

Prior to becoming a volunteer with NCJW, Nussbaum worked for 35 years in management positions within the Jewish community. She also worked as a private consultant to various Jewish and secular organizations.
