Thank you to our community for celebrating Banned Book Week. Red Wine and Blue, Advocates for Inclusive Education and the Rainbow Room hosted three community events this past week.
On Wednesday the Rainbow Room held a story time to read inclusive children’s books and discuss the issue of censorship. On Thursday over 60 people gathered at the Garden Bar at Puck to discuss banned books, Central Bucks School District policies, how to organize to support public education and the importance of voting in this November election.
We collected over 150 books to be distributed to Little Free Libraries and wrote thank you notes to our school librarians. On Saturday books came to life as we marched through Doylestown and chanted “Read Banned Books.”
It was wonderful to bring the community together over our love for reading and our support for a diverse and inclusive community. While some in our community think it’s okay to challenge books for removal from school libraries and classrooms, the majority of people do not agree. We have a voice and we used it this past week to say no to book bans in CBSD and to support our students, teachers and librarians.
We will use our vote on Nov. 8 to elect candidates who share the values of public education, diversity, inclusion and equity. And we will vote in 2023 for school board candidates that will hear our voices.
