John McDonnell, brings back “Funny Shorts”

On March 31, from 3-5 p.m., Doylestown playwright John McDonnell will present another afternoon of short plays at the James-Lorah Auditorium, Doylestown.

“Funny Shorts Part II” features local actors in staged readings of seven brand-new John McDonnell plays. It’s two hours of pure silliness, with wacky characters and zany plots.

“I like putting characters in funny situations and seeing what happens,” McDonnell says. “For example, I have one play where Dracula does online dating, another that’s a film noir parody with a gangster who has terrible dietary habits, and one where a demon in Hell gets a poor performance review .... Everybody’s laughing like crazy at rehearsals, so I know the audience will love the plays.”

McDonnell has written two dozen ebooks (novels, short story collections, etc.), and in recent years he has expanded into playwriting. His short, comic plays have been featured at festivals in Alabama, Washington, Texas, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“Funny Shorts Part II” features many local actors. Rick Goodwin, Nancy Vander Zwan, Dave Levy, and Sarah LeClair are all from Doylestown.

The cast also includes Gerry Martin (Lambertville), JaQuinley Kerr (New Hope), Joey Perillo (Yardley Borough), Nyiema Lunsford (Newtown), Righteous Jolly (Langhorne), and Eric Slodysko (Coal Township).

Admission for “Funny Shorts Part II” is $15. Seats are unreserved; doors open at 2:45 p.m. The James-Lorah House Auditorium is located at the corner of Broad and Main streets in Doylestown. Tickets are available at the door or online at:
