Newtown Arts Company, producers of live theater for the greater Newtown community for more than 35 years, will hold a fundraising event for the Joe McKernan Memorial Scholarship Fund on Tuesday, June 25, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Isaac Newton’s Restaurant, 18 S. State St., Newtown.
Newtown Borough resident Joseph J. McKernan Jr., past president of Newtown Arts Company, died Feb. 16, 2018. A visionary leader, inspiring actor and director, a caring friend and mentor to many, McKernan appeared on the Newtown Theatre stage, often with his wife, Anne, and sons, Jack and Liam.
A passionate advocate of theater education, McKernan taught stage combat in the company’s Classics for Kids productions and Stars of Tomorrow summer theater program, and led Shakespeare workshops. At Bucks County Playhouse he was a workshop instructor and adjudicator in the student theater festival, taught improvisation and stage combat, and was a director in the New Voices festival.
The Joe McKernan Scholarship Fund has been established as part of the Newtown Arts Company’s continued mission of scholarship aid to support high school graduates pursuing higher education in the performing and fine arts.
Since its founding in 1983 Newtown Arts Company has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to area students.
