Jefferson Abington Hospital creates patient safety position

Posted

During his lifetime, Edward Asplundh was passionate about supporting the patient safety and quality program at Jefferson Abington Hospital.
That passion will carry on through a new position: the Edward Asplundh Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer. Dr. Oren Guttman is the inaugural officer.
Guttman is an associate professor of anesthesiology in the Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine and a national expert on patient safety.

Asplundh served as chair of Abington’s board of trustees and helped raise $20 million for nursing scholarships. He led Abington’s campaign to raise $50 million to build the Lenfest Pavilion.
After he died in December 2020, his family and friends contributed more than $3.4 million in his memory. A portion of those funds was used to establish the new safety position.
Another portion of the $3.4 million raised was used to create the Edward Asplundh Physician and Nursing Fund for Professional Advancement. It will underwrite the cost for up to 40 staff members to attend the annual Institute for Healthcare Improvement conference (or similar opportunities) every year.
