Is redistricting needed?

Posted

In last week’s issue of the Herald (Jan. 6), gerrymandering was the subject of one writer’s letter and how redistricting is based on the latest U.S. Census.
Has there been such a population shift that major redistricting changes are even warranted?

There’s no way to make everyone happy when it comes to modifying voting districts, since the gerrymandering game has been going on almost as long as the United States has been a nation and both political parties are equally guilty. If you’d like to view an extreme case tied to this practice, search for “Maryland’s 8th U.S. Congressional District” – it stretches all the way from the Pennsylvania border to the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), and there’s a point in the middle where it’s so narrow, one can walk from one side to the other in about five minutes.
