Tribute to a musical Titan

Honoring lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim’s memory

Posted

The Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center paid tribute Sunday, Dec. 5, to the lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim, who died in late November.
Singers from local high schools, local theater companies and community members gathered for a performance of Sondheim’s “No One Is Alone” (from “Into the Woods”) on the porch of Highland Farm. The Doylestown property, which is currently privately owned, was the home of Oscar Hammerstein II and his family from 1940-1960.
As a young emerging musician and lyricist in his teens, Sondheim lived in Doylestown, and during his time here he met and was mentored by Hammerstein. Sondheim frequently spoke of the great impact Hammerstein had on his life.

The Sondheim Tribute was organized by museum board member and Lenape Middle School Choir Director Jaime Rogers.
Students from Central Bucks and Pennridge school districts, George School and Theater Arts Center were among the young people who comprised the choir. Also singing were vocalists from Town and Country Players, The Bucks County Choral Society, Music Mountain Theatre and The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Bucks County.
The Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center is raising funds to purchase, restore, and preserve Highland Farm, Hammerstein’s former home and creative epicenter. Those who wish to honor the Hammerstein/Sondheim legacy can make a gift at: hammersteinmuseum.org. All donations through Dec. 31, will be matched by members of the board.
