Hockey notes: West’s Poliak is Senior Night star

Posted

Sammy Poliak won’t forget his Senior Night.

With just two seconds left in overtime against North Penn, the CB West senior found the back of the net to give his Bucks a thrilling 5-4 win last Monday. Teammate Adam Ricci had his second straight two-goal game while senior Kyle Fasolak saved 34 shots. The win snapped a six-game Bucks losing streak.

The game-winner was Poliak’s second score of the night, a theme that emerged as the Bucks completed a busy week. Two nights later, CB West routed Souderton 10-4. Poliak (four goals) and Anthony Dowd both tallied hat tricks. West (5-10) outscored Souderton 7-1 in the game’s middle 27 minutes to command the game.

West finally ran out of gas last Thursday in a 10-4 loss to Pennsbury at Grundy. Poliak continued his eye-opening week with two more goals. After some well-deserved rest, the Bucks ice up against Neshaminy this Thursday.

An anticipated matchup came last Thursday night at Grundy as Council Rock South won its fourth straight game, 5-2, over Central Bucks South. The Golden Hawks have outscored their opponents 24-6 during the streak.

CR South (10-1-0-1) got four first period goals – including two from Kevin Koles – to take a domineering lead. Their Wednesday late game against potent Pennridge at Hatfield is a likely preview of the SHSHL National championship.

For the Titans (7-6-0-1), Aydin Thierolf scored his 14th goal of the year as CB South completed the SHSHL gauntlet; the week before, CB South fell to Pennridge. CB South, who has not had a winning or losing streak of greater than two games this season, plays Pennsbury on Thursday.

There was little suspense in Thursday’s Pennridge-North Penn game as the defending state champion Rams (10-3) took on the last-place Knights. Pennridge romped 13-3. Kevin Pico had a hat trick as eight different Rams scored. Pico now has four straight multi-point games.

Pennridge extends its SHSHL win streak to eight, with an average margin of victory of over five goals during the run.

Last Thursday, for the second time in a week, Council Rock North (4-8-1-1) topped Bensalem by two goals. North’s 6-4 win came on the heels of an 8-6 triumph over the Owls on Jan. 19. Both games were at Grundy.

Bensalem scored the first goal but North responded with six unanswered scores, including a hat trick from Jackson Accardi. The week prior, it was hats off to North’s Lucas Siomos for his three goals.

North next played CB East in a Wednesday late game. East’s Friday tilt with Neshaminy closed the week for the SHSHL National. The Patriots (7-5-1) fell 3-0 to hot goalie Cory Hemberger and the Redskins. East netminder Matt Mangiacapre saved 45 of 48 shots in a noteworthy effort.

Few teams have been as up and down as East. The Patriots started the year with a four-game win streak and followed it with a four-game losing streak. Friday’s game ended a four-game unbeaten streak.

In the SHSHL American, Quakertown (7-4-1-1) split its first two games with Plymouth Whitemarsh. The Colonials scored an overtime goal last Wednesday to skate to a 3-2 win. Panther goalie Matthew Krem saved 24 shots.

Quakertown, who plays struggling Springfield (M) on Friday, is still ahead of Wissahickon for the third and final playoff spot. The Panthers conclude their regular season on the 15th against Wissahickon in a game likely to have enormous playoff ramifications.
