History Lives: Christmas Street Scene

Posted

Frank X. Shelly, then president of the Doylestown Chamber of Commerce in 1959, wrote in the local paper, “The very attractive street decorations have been completely erected in Downtown Doylestown and have received many fine comments of appreciation.
“Actually, these remarks should be addressed to the businessmen who pay the entire cost each year, which amounts to several thousands of dollars. In our opinion, the decorations in Doylestown are several steps above other towns of this size. – We were pleased to see pictures of downtown Phoenix, Arizona, recently showing exactly the same type of Christmas decorations purchased from the same firm where we were fortunate enough to buy!”

The street decorations of 62 years ago can be seen in this view of East State Street looking toward Main Street in Doylestown.
