Ten years ago a graphic artist at the Herald, Christine Baal, conceived an idea for a contest. “Let’s have some fun,” she said.
She thought readers would enjoy a game of counting turrkeys – it was Thanksgiving season. She found a tiny turkey image and we hid them in photographs. Readers were asked to find the images and let the Herald know where they were – by U.S. Mail, email, phone or hand delivery.
The only award was name and hometown printed in the Herald. The first year we had fewer than a hundred entries. The game caught on so we added shamrocks and fireworks and nonprofit brands. As popularity grew recording the names and hometowns became a labor intensive project so we cut back to just two counting contests, at Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day.
Today we have prizes from local businesses to add to the challenge.
For Count the Turkeys 2019 we had 366 entries. Since it’s our 10th year and the run of the paper is too full to contain the list, it is printed here.
