Groups celebrate Constitution Day with online education

Posted

A partnership between the Washington Crossing Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP) is celebrating Constitution Day, Sept. 17, by offering online education about the United States Constitution.
Their combined efforts have created and launched the “Constitution Compendium,” a web page offering a collection of educational resources and information about the U.S. Constitution at https://www.washingtoncrossingpark.org/constitution-compendium.
Constitution Day is celebrated each year on Sept. 17 to mark the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. It is part of Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, a national week of recognition started by the DAR in 1955.
The “Constitution Compendium” was created to inform and inspire the general public but also to help teachers because schools that receive U.S. federal funds are required to offer education about the U.S. Constitution. Thus, in addition to general information, lists of suggested reading and web resources, and some unique coloring pages, the page has a strong classroom component.

DAR and FWCP teachers shared their own classroom materials and expertise, offering valuable lesson plans, classroom activities, worksheets, and resources for targeted class groupings of K-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12. All the materials for each age group are collected into a single PDF document, offering teachers an inclusive “grab and go” library of ideas on how to teach about the U.S. Constitution.
Another section, titled “Constitution/Crossing Connections,” offers original research detailing the six men who both signed the U.S. Constitution and participated in General George Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware River.
The Washington Crossing Chapter DAR and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park are longtime community partners, both with strong educational missions.
