Flemington DIY announces diverse fall jazz series

Posted

Flemington DIY, 26 Stangl Road, Flemington, N.J., has announced its fall jazz series, the second of the year at its new space.

The four-show series spans October through December, and features an eclectic variety of contemporary jazz artists, some previously playing the area.

“These are top-notch, high quality shows featuring acts from New York City and beyond. And the beauty of it all … you can stay in town and enjoy some serious music for a seriously good price. And be home at a reasonable hour.” said Director Jeff Hersch.

The series kicks off Saturday, Oct. 8 with the Hattie Simon Quartet. Simon is commonly praised for her ability to compose “in the moment,” delivering inventive, spontaneous melodies with razor-sharp precision. Untethered by genre, her work encompasses classic and modern jazz, neo-soul, indie-pop, and countless other styles.

Saturday, Oct. 22 features Winard Harper, a crowd favorite of past Flemington DIY series. Constantly in reverence of his predecessors while remaining innovative in his own right, Harper has been among the celebrated drummers in jazz for many years. The performance will feature special guests Megha Vadehra and Kameelah Harper.

Saturday, Nov. 12 highlights Yvonnick Prene and his harmonica-fronted trio. He earned a master’s degree in music at the Sorbonne University in Paris in 2011, and while still enrolled, he moved to New-York City to receive multiple full-tuition scholarships at the City College of New York, Columbia University and at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

The series closes out Saturday, Dec. 10 with returning act Horizons Quartet, led by saxophonist Dan Wilkins and featuring the esteemed lineup of James Collins, Gene Perla, and Byron Landham.

All tickets are $17 each in advance or $20 each at the door, with shows starting at 8 p.m. Performances feature two sets with a brief intermission. Light snacks and refreshments will be available. Space is accessible. Tickets and information are at flemingtondiy.org/jazz.
