Fry’s Run Watershed Association Program: Family Fun for Children and Adults

Saturday, September 18, 2021, 10 am to 1 pm, offers healthy outdoor activities for young and old, children and parents alike. Activities begin at Fry’s Run County Park, corner of 611S. and Royal Manor Rd., in Williams Township.

Visitors will learn, first-hand, how to evaluate a stream’s clarity by examining presence of fish and frogs, birds and trees on the streamside. Engaging in arts and crafts, they can express their impressions about the pollinators and macroinvertebrates they’ll see, guided by artists Mary and Don, FRWA members.

At 10 am, visitors will follow Scott Douglas, president of Cook’s Creek Watershed Assn., as he shows them an array of macroinvertebrates collected right from the nearby stream. They’ll see how these tiny creatures play an important role in water health and thus their own health.

At 11 am. visitors can join a FRWA member at another property where Nate Pritchard, Northampton County watershed specialist, can point to impact of stormwater runoff and erosion.

By 12:30 visitors can put to work what they’ve been learning to assess stream health and its impact on their lives and environment with the FISH protocol.

Throughout the event FRWA will offer for sale a wide variety of native plants and trees -- e.g., Joe pye weed (a name that delights children), cranberry viburnum, elderberry, blue lobelia, and many others.

The event is free, and everybody is welcome to learn the benefits of their local watersheds.
