Expanding the Bucks County Art Tradition

Posted

In documenting early 20th-century Bucks County, local artists often chose picturesque rural subjects and stone houses that suggest continuity with an agrarian past. But times change and artists working locally now might choose not to ignore the urbanized aspects of life here.
Emily Thompson has a fond regard for the vestiges of commercialism. Her portraits of architectural subjects are adroitly created with a palette knife as well as brushwork. They unflinchingly show the signs of age and wear, rust and corrosion. Her textured work recognizes what was, and what may not be around much longer. But her paintings will endure.
