Posted

A Doylestown resident will become a centenarian on Jan. 29.

Catherine Sclafani Longabucco’s story began 100 years ago, on Jan. 29, 1923, in Mount Vernon, N.Y. After graduating from A.B. Davis High School, she worked for 11 years in Manhattan, attaining the position of chief bookkeeper.

She married Frank Longabucco, a veteran of World War II in 1948. The couple moved to Spring Valley, N.Y., in 1959, where they raised their three children (Amelia, John and Frank Jr.). After a short hiatus, Catherine rejoined the workforce, taking positions in Rockland County and New Jersey.

During their 54-year marriage, Catherine and Frank enjoyed traveling in the U.S,, Europe and Brasil. Catherine always enjoyed cooking, learned to knit and loved helping her growing family which now included seven grandchildren. After retiring, she was a member of the Hubert Humphrey Senior Center. Catherine joined (New York State) Fred Eller American Legion Post 1447 Auxiliary and served as treasurer for 17 years.

In 2021, she moved to Doylestown. She loves attending Central Bucks Senior Center and appreciates the warm welcome she has received. Playing Mahjong and bingo here are highlights of her week. In addition, Catherine loves to read, play Rummikub and complete daily Sudoku puzzles.

At 100 Catherine still keeps in close contact with her longtime friends and her 10 grandchildren, eager to hear what they are up to in their jobs, college and daily lives. She feels especially blessed to be able to play with her six great-grandchildren.

The Central Bucks Senior Activity Center will celebrate her birthday 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan., 31.
