Doylestown Motel

Posted

In the early 1930s a hardware store stood on the southwest corner of South Main Street and Oakland Avenue. The hardware store, at 42 S. Main St., was eventually demolished and by 1956 the Flying-A Gas Station operated on the site. Later, a taxi service and Hertz rental car business shared space with the service station.
The garage was sold in the early 1960s and converted into the Doylestown Motel. Visitors to Doylestown had their choice of four units on the first floor or three units on the second floor, each “fully furnished with two double beds, full bath/shower over tub, individual gas heat, and fully air conditioned.” There were also an office used for motel rentals and the continuing taxi service, a second office, a private apartment, and parking for nine cars.
But by 1969 the building had been sold again, redecorated and made into an office building occupied by Credit Thrift of America. A complete renovation was done in 1980, and an addition was built creating three large office suites. Today the building is designated as 4 West Oakland and is occupied by Le Macaron French Pastries and Braun & Litt Law Offices. The old motel, now a 5,800-square-foot structure, is for sale and destined to change hands yet again.
