Don’t tie paying our debts to controlling future spending

Posted

Republicans insisting their support for addressing our national debt must be tied to spending cuts is both hypocritical and disastrous.

Candidate Trump promised he, as president, would rid the United States of its $19 trillion debt in two terms. By the end of his first term, Trump and the Republicans added a staggering $7.8 trillion to our debt. Those who did benefit from the Trump-GOP budget management were mostly the wealthy and big business that enjoyed tax breaks. That resulted in revenue loss to our treasury.

The Republicans say they would provide support if President Biden would agree to policy concessions and spending cuts to social programs, programs that address the needs of every-day Americans.

The United States must pay its bills including those biggies Trump and the Republicans incurred for us. A default would crash markets and eliminate millions of jobs. Our retirement savings would take big hits.

It would also downgrade the nation’s credit rating and add increased costs when the government needs to borrow money.

Paying bills and controlling future spending are two entirely separate matters. Get on with it.
