Doane seniors carry on school tradition

Posted

Doane Academy opened its 185th year on Sept. 7 with the senior class engaged in the traditional crossing of the Delaware River from Bristol in canoes.
After about 20 minutes they arrived along the banks of the opposite shore, in Burlington, N.J., their school perched on the hill above the river, directly in front of them.
Students had met at the Bristol canoe launch site at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning before moving into the river along with Head of School George Sanderson, as well as other chaperones. On the other side of the river, the seniors were greeted by the entire school community of students, teachers, parents, and friends of the school on the banks of the Delaware River, immediately in front of the school. This year sees the opening the school with its largest enrollment since the mid-1980s, and all students, including international students from China, Kenya, Italy, and Croatia, are on campus for 100% in-person learning.

Doane Academy was open for in-person learning for almost the entirety of the 2020-2021 school year. Sanderson shared that “the school’s thorough mitigation efforts have worked and continue to work extremely well, with zero cases of in-school spread since the beginning of the pandemic.”
