Dining Out — Restaurant Roving: Stockton Market café open all week long

Posted

Change is coming to the Stockton Market in Stockton, N.J., starting with the newly opened Farm Café serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week.

Previously, customers could only find meals at the market on the weekends, when the other vendors were open. But the area of the market that previously held a variety of food vendors now is dedicated to the restaurant.

Steven Lau, owner of the Salt House gastropub in New Hope, purchased the market last summer. He hired Nancy Keen, general manager of the former River Cat Café in New Hope, as manager of the Farm Café. She took over after the River Cat closed at the end of the September, and the new café opened Nov. 1.

Keen is not the only familiar face at the Farm Café. She brought additional staff with her from the River Cat, and installed a similar breakfast menu.

For now, the café is only serving breakfast dishes and a full menu of bagel choices. A lunch menu will be added by Thanksgiving, but breakfast will continue to be served all day.

The current menu features the popular avocado toast with egg and salmon toast, along with a variety of omelets, a quiche of the day, the Farmer’s Wife (buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy), huevos rancheros, corned beef hash, eggs benedict, breakfast sandwiches, French toast, pancakes, and a variety of egg dishes. Customers often choose specialty egg dishes including eggs over grilled polenta, served with chorizo sausage, feta, tomato and pepper jam. Another favorite is the Paleo, which is three eggs any style over spinach with a choice of meat, tomatoes, avocado and pico de gallo.

Bagel options can serve as breakfast or lunch with fillings ranging from simple butter to whitefish, lox, egg salad and flavored cream cheeses. A bagel breakfast sandwich includes the meat and cheese of the diner’s choice. Those who opt for bacon are treated to Keen’s favorite: baked with a drizzle of maple syrup and a sprinkle of pepper.

Other vendors offering meal options at the market include the popular Market Pizza, El Mariachi, BBQ 434, and Market Delicatessen and Coffee, which has the same daily hours as the Farm Café.

More changes are expected at the market, including a possible expansion of hours beyond the weekend. Current hours vary for the vendors; for a list see the website stocktonmarket.com.
