Dickens Double Bill at Byers’ Choice Ltd. features great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens

Posted

On Saturday, Sept. 10, local Christmas attraction, Byers’ Choice Ltd., will transform its factory floor into a theater, transporting the audience to the world of Charles Dickens with two performances by English actor Gerald Charles Dickens.

The great-great-grandson of the legendary author will enact two of his famous ancestor’s short stories, “The Signalman” and “Doctor Marigold” during this special Bucks County appearance.

Gerald brings a range of emotions to the stage, from fear to sadness and hope to joy, during his one-man shows, which have entertained audiences across the United States and the UK for the past 30 years.

“The Signalman” is a spine-chilling, atmospheric ghost story telling the haunting memories of a grisly railway disaster, inspired by the Staplehurst rail crash of 1865 involving Charles Dickens.

The melodramatic “Doctor Marigold” (one of Charles Dickens’ most popular performances during his reading tours) is a street peddler, addressing the audience directly with his fast-paced sales patter. As he talks, he shares his inspiring life story, which is at once funny, tragic, heart breaking, and uplifting. Although little known today, Dr. Marigold still moves audiences as it did in Charles’ day.

Performances of “The Signalman” and “Doctor Marigold” are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Byers’ Choice Ltd., 4355 County Line Road, Chalfont. Purchase tickets at byerschoice.com/events.html or 215-822-6700

The actor will be available for an on-stage Q&A with the audience after each performance. All photographs, audio and video recordings are prohibited during his performances.
