Del Val High School celebrates athletes, coaches at Hall of Fame induction

Posted

Delaware Valley High School paid homage to some top athletes and coaches of yesteryear at its third induction banquet for Terrier Hall of Fame.
Plaques were presented, memories were shared, and the value of high school sports was celebrated.
The event, which had been delayed a year by the pandemic, took place at Razberry’s in Kingwood Township, N.J., on Thursday, Sept. 30.
“Our Terrier Athletic Hall of Fame is set up to honor the best athletes, coaches and teams from our rich sports history,” said Hall of Fame Chairman Andy Fitz. “We hope the names of the Hall of Fame members that are hung in the gym inspire the athletes at Del Val now and in the future to achieve their goals and dreams on the athletic fields, courts and mats.”
Coaches inducted were: Bob Snaith for football and baseball at Frenchtown High School, 1952-56; and Paul Petro Sr. for softball, 1977-87. FHS was Del Val’s predecessor.

Star athletes inducted were: Neal Risley, FHS Class of ’56, for football, basketball and baseball; Bob Bachman, Class of ’67, for football, basketball and baseball; Ken Berger, Class of ’69, for football, wrestling and baseball; Sharon (Sloyer) McGowan, Class of ’73, for field hockey and track and field; Kevin Cahill, Class of ’77, for cross country; Jeff Segreaves, Class of ’75, for wrestling; Brent Conly, Class of ’94, for wrestling and cross country; Chloe Early, Class of ’10, for soccer, basketball and track and field; and Alyssa Fleming, for soccer, basketball and track and field.
Championship teams inducted were the 1960 undefeated girls’ basketball team; the 1985 softball team with a 25-2 record; and the 1985 wrestling team with a 19-2 record.
The induction was “a great success and allowed 14 teams, coaches and athletes to express their feelings about their careers,” said Fitz. “They spoke from the heart and many had family in attendance. A few also traveled great distances to be there, such as Kalamazoo, Mich. They expressed thanks to their coaches, parents, and families for all the hard work they put in for them to achieve their successes. It was wonderful to see everyone and great to see how well they were all doing in life in their years beyond Del Val.” Fitz teaches math and coaches the wrestling team.
This was the third group inducted. The next induction will be next fall. Nominations are now open. Nomination forms can be found at the school website: dvrhs.org. Click on “athletics” and “HOF Nomination.” Nominations will be accepted through April of 2022.
