Covid kills the bee

Posted

The New Hope-Solebury library’s Community Spelling Bee slated for Oct. 1 is not to be this year. Covid killed it.
Solebury Supervisor Robert McEwan, library liaison, told the board Tuesday night about the fundraiser’s cancellation. The supervisors traditionally field a team of members in the event.
His only consolation, he said with a straight face, will be an untarnished spelling record for the supervisors this year.
The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury’s board of trustees on its web site states:

“Due to the rise in delta variant cases, concern about breakthrough cases and general nervousness about attending indoor events, the board of trustees has made the decision to postpone the Community Spelling Bee, scheduled for Oct. 1.
“While this was a hard call to make, we want to do what’s best for our community. We will wait to reschedule the Bee at a time when indoor events will be safe and comfortable for everyone. Thanks for supporting The Free Library, and we’re so very grateful for your understanding!”
Participants, donors and volunteers should have been contacted about the postponement, the library stated. If not, teams can reach out to CKWhitney@comcast.net; sponsors, volunteers and alphabet sponsors can contact flnhsbee@gmail.com; and program ad buyers should email nhsbee2@gmail.com.
The library board thanked Bee sponsors McCaffrey’s Food Market, First National Bank & Trust Company, Addison Wolfe Real Estate, Penn Community Bank and Kiki Vodka; “our bee-dazzling Bee teams,” both new and returning; alphabet letter buyers; local businesses that purchased program ads; New Hope-Solebury School District; and the volunteers and library staff.
