The Council Rock School Board approved an ambitious package of capital improvements for the 2023-2024 school year totaling $8.8 million at its Jan. 19 meeting.

Most of the work will take place over the summer. Included in the projects is $2.3 million for new lighting in the auditorium at Council Rock High School South in Northampton; $1.7 million for tennis and basketball court replacements at CR South; $1.37 million for paving and concrete repairs at CR South, Council Rock High School North in Newtown Township and five different elementary schools; $500,000 for playground improvements at various schools; and $495,000 for stadium repairs and coating at Walt Snyder Stadium at CR North.

In other actions from the meeting, the board approved an Act 1 resolution that commits it to raising property taxes no more than 4.1% — the state’s established Act 1 Index — for the 2023-2024 school year.

Board member Mike Roosevelt emphasized that passage of the resolution does not necessarily mean there will be an increase as high as 4.1%.

“It means we can’t go over that,” he explained. “Any increase will be somewhere between 0 and 4.1%.”

By approving the resolution, the board “certifies that (raising taxes) at a rate less than or equal to the index will be sufficient to balance its final budget,” according to the document.
