Concerns about planned Doylestown hotel abound

Posted

Many of us who attended Doylestown Borough’s Historical and Architectural Review Board meeting last month regarding the proposal to build a hotel on the site of the old Borough Hall, had concerns about the proposed design. The project architect explained that the details were drawn from the town’s “factory aesthetic.”

This makes me wonder if the architects have visited Doylestown or West Court Street. What factories?

The immediate surroundings of the site consist of residential buildings — many of which have been repurposed as offices or restaurants, but which still look residential. The adjacent cross streets, North Hamilton Street and Harvey Avenue are entirely residential. Nearby, on Main Street, State Street and further west on Court Street, there are larger commercial buildings, including two historic inns, but none of them look like, or ever were factories.

Doylestown has quite a few large brick buildings interspersed with residences which could serve as inspiration for the proposed hotel. I urge the architects to spend a couple of days walking the streets of Doylestown and to come up with a design which better fits the aesthetic of our town.

David Weston, Doylestown
