Community colleges partner with foundation to offer camp for Hispanic high school students

Posted

A summer camp for primarily Hispanic and underserved high school sophomores and juniors will teach life and academic skills and offer training in entrepreneurship through a partnership between Northampton Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College and the “Futuros Empresarios”/Future Entrepreneurs (FE) Program.
Applications for the camp are now available on LCCC’s website. The camp runs Sunday through Friday, July 17 to 22, with the internship portion set for July 25 to Aug. 19.
An information session is scheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 31.
The FE Program is a two-part, five-week summer program where students can learn skills that will prepare them for college or to enter the workforce. It includes a one-week residential experience at Northampton Community College (NCC)where participants stay in the college’s student residence halls and learn life and academic skills while receiving career development education and entrepreneurship/business training.
After completing the educational and residential portions of the program, students are partnered with local businesses and organizations for internships where mentors share actual business experiences. This is the second year that the community colleges have partnered with the Fé Foundation to host the summer camp.

Local high school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply for the camp experience. Hispanic/Latino students are especially encouraged to apply. Students will spend time on both the Northampton and LCCC campuses, including a residential experience at Northampton, followed by a four-week internship conducted with local businesses and organizations.
Students who complete the program are eligible to participate in the Fé Foundation’s math and verbal enrichment program (SAT prep) and the textbook scholarship program. All the programs are provided at no cost to the student, funded by local businesses, colleges and universities and other private sponsors.
Since the program started in 2009, more than 310 students from 10 school districts in the Lehigh Valley have benefited.
Selection to participate in the program is through a competitive process that includes an application, 250-word essay, recommendation letter, academic transcripts and a personal interview with the Fé Foundation Board Trustees. Students will be selected in April and May.
