It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish.
CB East found themselves down 1-0 early to archrival CB West on Monday. Kate Weyer headed in a corner kick from all-state forward Taylor Moyer to give the visiting Bucks the lead six minutes into the match.
“I think that East-West games are very tough to manage. The energy and intensity that both teams bring out is really difficult,” observed East coach Jake Nesteruk. “We knew that West was going to be dangerous off of restarts. They’re incredibly well organized. They’re really disciplined and it hurt.
“For us, it was settling down and being a little calmer around the ball,” Nesteruk continued. “We tended to rush a lot of things early. We responded really well. To come back from down 1-0 in the first few minutes and to bounce back as quickly as we did, I’m really proud of the group.”
East’s Ashley Macomber equalized the match six minutes later; a second tally from Elise Duffy in the 29th minute proved to be the game-winner for the Patriots.
“I won the 50/50 and then Elise shot it at the goalie,” Macomber described. “She bumbled it and I had a wide open net and hit it in.”
“Morgan Kelly got a nice head ball off of the throw in,” explained Duffy, whose five goals leads the Patriots. “I just followed it in and one-timed it in the back of the net.”
The 2-1 score held on to be the final. “We knew if we ended up getting caught up in their game, that we weren’t going to play up to our potential,” Nesteruk stated. “As tough as it is, it’s recognizing that we’re going to be a little bit better if we don’t rush things. It’s one thing for me to say it, but it’s a whole other thing to get them to do it in a game that means so much to both teams.”
East (4-1, 3-1 Colonial) has won three straight SOL Colonial matches. They routed Souderton 5-0 on Sept. 14 and topped rival CB South 3-0 on the 17th. Macomber scored in all three games.
“I’ve gotten rebounds in the box,” Macomber said. “My first goal was a through ball, my second was a rebound and this one was a rebound. It’s all Jake, because every time we score on a rebound in practice, we get two points instead of one!”
