CB East caps big week with rivalry wins

Posted

It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish.
CB East found themselves down 1-0 early to archrival CB West on Monday. Kate Weyer headed in a corner kick from all-state forward Taylor Moyer to give the visiting Bucks the lead six minutes into the match.
“I think that East-West games are very tough to manage. The energy and intensity that both teams bring out is really difficult,” observed East coach Jake Nesteruk. “We knew that West was going to be dangerous off of restarts. They’re incredibly well organized. They’re really disciplined and it hurt.
“For us, it was settling down and being a little calmer around the ball,” Nesteruk continued. “We tended to rush a lot of things early. We responded really well. To come back from down 1-0 in the first few minutes and to bounce back as quickly as we did, I’m really proud of the group.”
East’s Ashley Macomber equalized the match six minutes later; a second tally from Elise Duffy in the 29th minute proved to be the game-winner for the Patriots.
“I won the 50/50 and then Elise shot it at the goalie,” Macomber described. “She bumbled it and I had a wide open net and hit it in.”
“Morgan Kelly got a nice head ball off of the throw in,” explained Duffy, whose five goals leads the Patriots. “I just followed it in and one-timed it in the back of the net.”
The 2-1 score held on to be the final. “We knew if we ended up getting caught up in their game, that we weren’t going to play up to our potential,” Nesteruk stated. “As tough as it is, it’s recognizing that we’re going to be a little bit better if we don’t rush things. It’s one thing for me to say it, but it’s a whole other thing to get them to do it in a game that means so much to both teams.”

East (4-1, 3-1 Colonial) has won three straight SOL Colonial matches. They routed Souderton 5-0 on Sept. 14 and topped rival CB South 3-0 on the 17th. Macomber scored in all three games.
“I’ve gotten rebounds in the box,” Macomber said. “My first goal was a through ball, my second was a rebound and this one was a rebound. It’s all Jake, because every time we score on a rebound in practice, we get two points instead of one!”

The Patriot offense racked up an impressive 10 goals in five halves of division play. “I think it’s starting strong and not sitting in the beginning,” Duffy credited. “It’s getting the first goal, winning the first header and doing everything to prove our point that we’re here to play and will stop at nothing to win.”
“I could not be prouder of the girls for the composure, maturity and discipline that they have showed,” Nesteruk added. “It makes things a lot easier when you are able to put goals on the board as often as we’ve been able to do.”
Each team had a good scoring chance in the second frame. West keeper Jules Broskey came out to break up a Duffy breakaway in the 54th minute. A cross by Moyer with 14:30 remaining just missed left.
Broskey recorded eight saves. East keeper Skyler Gash saved three. The Patriots had five corner kicks to the Bucks’ four.
West (3-2, 1-2 Colonial) entered on a two-game win streak, with victories over CB South and Wilson-West Lawn. Moyer and Alexis Castro tallied five of the seven Buck goals in those matches.
Both teams hit the road for late game Wednesday Colonial matches. CB East traveled to North Penn; CB West visited Souderton.
Although the Patriots were already turning their attention to North Penn just minutes after Monday’s match, they still got to celebrate a weekend CB sweep.
“We still have a lot to work on. It’s only our fifth game in and there is a lot more to come,” Duffy predicted. “We’re almost reaching our full potential. We just have to put away more of our chances.”
“We still have a lot to do and a lot to show,” Macomber echoed. “We want to come out even better than we did the past few games.”
