Carversville UCC plans cemetery event

Posted

Each year on the last Sunday of May, members of the Carversville United Church of Christ assemble in the Carversville Cemetery for a short service honoring those who served the country who are no longer with us.

On Sunday, May 29, the Jubilant Brass will join the Rev. Dr. Robert Fogal and the congregation at 10 a.m., when they will play Memorial Day music for the worship service.

Immediately following the 10 a.m. church service, the Jubilant Brass will join the congregation at the Civil War Monument in the Carversville Cemetery next to the church. During the ceremony, the ensemble will play patriotic music, and the names of Carversville citizens who fought in the Civil War will be read aloud. Participants will then speak the names of friends or family members they are remembering for the holiday.

The public is welcome to attend. The church service will begin at 10 a.m., and the outdoor memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Those who wish to attend only the memorial service can meet in the cemetery. The church is located at 3736 Aquetong Road in Carversville; the cemetery is adjacent to the church.

The Soldiers Monument, also known as the Civil War Monument, was erected by the Carversville Public School on Memorial Day in 1882. The names of 23 Carversville residents who fought in the Civil War are inscribed on the memorial.
