Carversville Inn set to usher in 15-month renovation

They said it before, but this time they really mean it.

The Solebury Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to grant a new Certificate of Appropriateness to rehabilitate the historic, but deteriorating, Carversville Inn at 6205 Fleecydale Road.

The board had granted a certificate last year as recommended by the Historical Architectural Review Board, but new modifications to the plan were presented this May.

So now, this June the planning board and the supervisors are scheduled to vote on the final Revised Land Development Plan and renovate the building.

Co-owner Milan Lint of Sawmill Road said last Thursday he hopes to have all renovations done in 15 months.

Lint said he and his partner, Mitchell Berlin, plan to get a permit to demolish a small building in the back and build a one-story kitchen (they have eliminated plans to build two guest suites above the kitchen).

He noted neighbors have said they are looking forward to the improvements.

In the next few weeks he hopes to start work on replacing the rotting front pillars.

“The design will be the same as now, but it will look new,” Lint said, adding he will probably change the colors.

Plans also call for a new bar, a restaurant and eight hotel rooms.

J.R. Maxwell Builders Inc. is the general contractor and Wolstenholme Associates is the architect.

Lint and Berlin bought the inn for $1.5 million in 2020 and estimated it will cost $2.7 million for restoration and improvements.

Will and Denis Mathias sold the inn after operating it for 31 years. Built in 1813, the inn was originally called the Bird-in-Hand. It was built in the Federal style, with two floors and a gabled roof. A third floor and porch were added in 1859. Over the years it has served as a hotel, general store, ice cream parlor and gas station.
