Calamari Sisters cook up quite a show, Sweet Charity sings

Posted

The Calamari Sisters will bring comedy, cooking, dancing and singing to Bucks County for their new show, “A Musical Cooking Lesson with The Calamari Sisters.”

The Bucks County Center for the Performing Arts production, runs through July 31, at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown.

BCCPA’s production of the musical “Sweet Charity” follows, Aug. 4 to Aug. 14, also at DelVal.

The only all-singing, all-dancing and all-cooking show in Bucks County, The Calamari Sisters share their lives of hijinks as two brassy broads from Brooklyn, Delphine and Carmela Calamari.

Attendees will learn their secret recipes for delicious Italian food, hear Calamari family anecdotes, taste their antipasto, help them make cannoli, and compete in their version of an onstage game show while the sisters sing live their own special versions of Broadway and pop favorites.

“The Calamari Sisters have graced stages all over the country and we are excited to bring them to Bucks County for the first time,” said Howard Perloff, artistic director of Bucks County Center for the Performing Arts. “This show has something for everyone.”

“Sweet Charity” is based on the screenplay for the 1957 Italian film “Nights of Cabiria.” However, where Federico Fellini’s black and white firm concerns the romantic ups and downs of an ever-hopeful prostitute, in the musical the character is a dancer-for-hire at a Times Square dance hall.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for nine Tony Awards winning the Award for Best Choreography, Bob Fosse. The musical was adapted for the screen in 1969.
