Bucks Symphony family concert is “Strings, Winds and Fire”

Posted

The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra presents its annual Family Concert at Central Bucks High School East in Buckingham, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.

The program — “Strings, Winds and Fire,” conducted by Music Director José Luis Domínguez — is for music lovers of all ages. Families are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy the sounds of the BCSO and dozens of talented young musicians.

The concert is sponsored by Tom and Judy Newman, the Central Bucks School District, and the Estate of Victoria P. Herd.

The concert opens with “Conga del Fuego” (Conga of Fire) by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez.

A highlight of the concert is the performance of the third movement of Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto in D,” played by 14-year-old Audrey Kim, winner of the BCSO’s Youth Concerto Competition.

A freshman at Conestoga High School in the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District, she began playing violin at age 4 and joined Temple Music Prep’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians six years ago. Recently, she was accepted to the Advanced Study Scholarship Ensemble program at the Settlement Music School.

The featured work of the afternoon is Benjamin Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” narrated by Central Bucks elementary school band director Mark Appiotti.

To conclude the concert, the BCSO welcomes the Wind Ensemble of Holicong Middle School, directed by Joel Chodoroff. Chodoroff, a 22-year veteran of the Holicong faculty, is director of five bands at the school and teaches Exploratory Music, Adaptive Music, and the 9th Grade Gifted Seminar.

His talented young musicians perform two pieces with the BCSO — “Factory Riffs” and “A Nation’s Prayer” (based on two patriotic tunes, “God of our Fathers” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”).

Tickets at $10 for adult can be purchased in Doylestown at Rutherford’s Camera Shop and the Doylestown Bookshop, or online at BucksCountySymphony.org. Students are admitted free.
