Bucks filmmaker’s documentary tapped to screen at New Hope festival

“From Liberty to Captivity,” a local documentary filmed, directed and produced by a Bucks County-based company, is among the entries in the 10th annual New Hope Film Festival (NHFF).

Described as an “emerging ‘Sundance East’,” the festival will run July 19 to 28.

The festival will feature films and scripts from 17 countries, including U.S. and world premieres. “Most of the world-class lineup is national and international; however, a small group of fine local films from Bucks, Lehigh and Hunterdon counties will also be screened,” according to NHFF organizers.

A screening of a local film – “From Liberty to Captivity” – will be held at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, July 20. The documentary was filmed and produced by Do What’s Wright Production Company in Bucks County. Debbie Wright, “From Liberty to Captivity” director and producer, will be on hand for the screening at the Phillips’ Mill Community Association’s theater, 2619 River Road, New Hope.

“Like so many people, I was not aware that sex trafficking was an issue in America, and certainly not in Bucks County,” said Wright, who is also president of Do What’s Wright Production Company.

“As I learned the shocking reality, and more importantly, the impact that citizens can have on this issue, I felt compelled to bring the truth, inspiring stories and this message of hope to our state and our nation.

“We are thrilled that the New Hope Film Festival leaders are passionate about social justice issue of sex trafficking and decided to highlight this issue during the festival to raise awareness about it.”

“From Liberty to Captivity” was filmed in several counties throughout the state. The documentary features interviews with leading state and national officials, experts, victim survivors, an ex-trafficker, and modern-day “freedom fighters” working together to rewrite history.

Since its premiere, the film has received critical acclaim and numerous awards.
