Bucks DAR hosts talk on Colonial attire

Posted

The Bucks Country Chapter of the DAR welcomed Kimberly Praria, the executive director for the Historic Fallsington Inc., on April 16 to talk about the clothes that women in the Colonial period would wear.

Praria came costumed with the basic clothes that women would wear for everyday living and working. She demonstrated how women could change their look by the layers they wore and were creative with different scarves and hats.

A half of acre of flax had to be set aside from farming to have enough linen for one adult clothing which meant that clothes had to serve many purposes. The women were surprised to see the knitted woolen stockings that the women had to make to keep their legs warm in the winter. She stripped down to her shift and stays, which in the Colonial time a woman would be considered naked.

Her description of how the stays were made and by whom raised many eyebrows. If you are interested in learning more about the DAR or if you have a Patriot, visit buckscountyDAR.org.
