Bucks Chapter of PA Sports Hall of Fame announces inductees

Posted

He’s being inducted as a legend, and that word is certainly appropriate for Fred Richter.
Richter will enter into the Bucks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 21 in the “Legends” category.
Other inductees include fellow Legend inductee Paul Wilson (Central Bucks East, Council Rock South track coach), posthumous inductee Dennis Warg (athletic director, Council Rock, Bensalem) and living inductees Lauren Crandall (Central Bucks East, field hockey); Kristen White Christman (Central Bucks East, tennis, soccer, golf); Addie Micir (Council Rock North, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse); Kelly Kopack Kaufman (Neshaminy, field hockey); Joseph Kiefer (Pennsbury soccer, wrestling, baseball); Ralph Tamm (Bensalem, football); Tyrone Lewis (Harry S Truman, basketball, football, indoor track); Dana Mitchell (Pennsbury, basketball, soccer, volleyball); Amanda Burke (William Tennent, diving); and Wayne Emme (Pennsbury, basketball).
The induction was held up for two years by COVID. Richter and his peers were actually elected as the Class of 2020.
In the mid 1960s, Richter was a three-year starter for Quakertown’s basketball team, where he was named to the All Bux-Mont team in his junior and senior seasons.
He went on to play at East Stroudsburg, where he was a varsity starter for three seasons. The 1970 team posted the first 20-win season in school history and Richter was named to the All-Conference team.
He began his coaching career at Central Bucks East, then returned to his alma mater as head coach for six years. From 1982-91 he was the girls basketball coach at Quakertown, where he recorded 145 wins. His 1982-83 team won the league championship with a 19-3 record and advanced to both the District One and PIAA tournaments.

In 1991 he became the head womens basketball coach at Allentown College, now DeSales University. His teams won 11 conference championships and have appeared in 10 NCAA tournaments.
His teams advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament twice. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs have had 14 20-win seasons and 612 wins.
He has been inducted into both the Pennridge/Quakertown Hall of Fame and the East Stroudsburg University Hall of Fame.
“My love of the game took me from playing at the high school level at Quakertown, and the college level, at East Stroudsburg University, to coaching at both levels,” Richter said. “Coaching women at DeSales University has been a dream come true, teaching young ladies to play the ‘right way’ as well as life lessons from playing the great game of basketball.”
The induction will be held at Brookside Manor at Somerton Springs, Bustleton Avenue and County Line Road in Feasterville. Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and the banquet begins at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $45 for adults, $25 for children under 12 and may be obtained on the Hall of Fame’s website, buckscountysportshof.com. No tickets will be sold at the door. Ticket purchase includes buffet dinner and membership in the Hall of Fame.
