Bucks 5K Series 25th anniversary rescheduled until 2021

Posted
The Bucks 5K Series was planning to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2020.

The board of directors were putting the final touches on the ambitious plans to make this a very special year. However, the coronavirus pandemic brought an abrupt end to all of the planning, and the season was canceled in March before the first race even took place. This was the first time in its history that any of the seven races were canceled.

At that point, there were record numbers registered to run the seven races. The spirit of the running community was not diminished by the cancellation of the entire Series. Their responses were understanding and positive. As a matter of fact, 60% of the registered runners either donated their registration fee or deferred their registration until 2021.

“In 2002, I was fairly new to running,” said Gert Freas, series communications director. “I ran in a few of the Bucks 5K Series races and have been hooked ever since. Here it is 18 years later, and it has become a family event. I am very blessed to be running the 5K races with my children and grandchildren. We get to the start line of many of the races, seeing new and previous series runners. The excitement and camaraderie of all the runners is addictive and brings you back for each race.”

As a result of the generosity of the runners and the commitment of the series sponsors, the series was still able to make a year-ending distribution to each of the nonprofit organizations. This brought the total amount raised by the series and its races to $1.83 million since 2002.

The series and its seven races benefit these important local organizations: Plumsteadville Fire Company, Bucks County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Doylestown Health’s Friends of the Heart Institute, YMCA of Bucks County for Operation Compassion to meet the emergency and basic needs of the community, Discover Doylestown, Our Lady of Mt Carmel elementary school, Chalfont’s Parks and Trails, and CB Cares.

The commitments of the series sponsors are extremely important to the success of the Bucks 5K Series. More than a few have been partnering with the series for many years. They include: Advanced Spine and Sports Chiropractic, Marvic Supply Company, Fred Beans Family of Dealerships, Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists, Marshall Financial Group, Mind Your Design, Delaware Valley University, Jarrett Vaughan Builders, Bucks County Road Runners, Doylestown Health Urgent Care, Penn Community Bank, EAS Water, Bagel Barrel and Planet Smoothie

The board of directors will miss the fellowship, enthusiasm, excitement and laughter that the series brings to the entire running community. However, as Dick Patterson, president of the Bucks 5K Series, knows, ”Everyone is looking forward to our 25th anniversary. The celebration will just be a year later.”
