Materese Roche, an accomplished oil painter based in Buckingham, will hold her first Open Studio in more than two years, on May 13, 14 and 15. Art collectors are invited to attend.
“I’m calling this exhibition “Double Vision,” because for the first time I am showing the sea marsh landscapes I’m known for, along with new abstract work. I think collectors of my work will be pleasantly surprised by the development,” she said.
Roche, who trained at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and with private teachers, has been painting professionally for more than 10 years. She specializes in the atmospheric landscapes where the land meets the sea and the sea meets the sky.
“My favorite compliment is that my paintings take the viewer away, the way a seaside visit does,” Roche said. She carefully evokes the weather and changing light of the places she paints. Coastal landscapes, especially those in New England, inspire her work.
“The pandemic limited travel and I found I wanted to dig deep and evoke in a more abstract way the feeling of the places I usually paint. I also wanted to paint the way water, metal, and stone look and feel.”
These new paintings are finding favor with people who like traditional art as well as those who generally prefer abstract work. “I think it’s because these paintings summon up something elemental and universal, an earthly texture and appearance. Double Vision will also include several still life paintings Roche has just completed.
Double Vision will be on view at the artist’s studio on a Bucks County farm at 5113 Anderson Road, Doylestown, for a limited time: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13; noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. To learn more about the paintings, visit the artist online.
