ArtYard and ACME Screening Room present documentary “Cruz”

Posted

ArtYard hosts a screening of the feature-length documentary “Cruz” and Q&A with the filmmaker at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.

The film by Teresa Camou Guerrero, to be shown at ArtYard’s McDonnell Theater, 13 Front St., Frenchtown, N.J., will be followed by a conversation with Guerrero, who risked her life to make “Cruz.” Tickets are available via a link at artyard.org/calendar.

Join the Acme Screening Room, 25 S. Union St., Lambertville, N.J., at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb 5, for a screening of “Cruz,” including a post screening discussion with the filmmaker.

In partnership with Fisherman’s Mark and ArtYard, this will be the first Acme programming presented in Spanish. The film is in Spanish and Rarámuri with English subtitles. An English translator will be present for the Q&A.

This weekend will be the first time “Cruz” has been screened in person with the filmmaker in the United States.

“Cruz” tells the story of Cruz Sanchez, the proud patriarch of an indigenous Rarámuri clan, who flees from his home high in the Mexican Sierras after he was forced off his tribe’s ancestral land by drug cartels and the violence they bring with them.

After refusing to grow opium poppies instead of corn, he and members of his community now live in exile and fear for their lives while desperately seeking justice and a safe return to their homeland.

“Cruz” aims to raise awareness about the consequences of illegal drug production in indigenous and peasant communities, the loss of territory and identity, and the lack of justice in Mexico.

Bring a donation of a nonperishable food item for Fisherman’s Mark to the Acme screening on Sunday. The event is free; register online to reserve a seat at acmescreeningroom.org.
