Over the last several months, I’ve had the chance to meet with lots of people who love Bucks County and their Herald newspaper.
Common threads emerged. I heard again and again about the county’s rich history and its vibrant arts scene.
From that guidance comes two new features you’ll find starting in today’s edition.
The Herald is happy to announce a new partnership with the Arts & Cultural Council of Bucks County to bring profiles of local artists to our readers.
Established in 1974, the Council works to promote the arts in Bucks County and to facilitate alliances between and among the region’s artists.
“Local Color,” as the series will be called, makes its debut today on Page C3 with a feature on painter Pat Proniewski, of Hamilton, N.J.
What I like about “Local Color,” which will run on the first Thursday of every month, is that, in addition to introducing me to an artist I hadn’t known about, it spends some time talking about technique and philosophy.
In Proniewski’s case, the piece discusses her use of light to add a complexity that challenges the viewer to see the subject in a new way.
Meanwhile, on Page A8, you’ll find the first entry in a new weekly series we’ll call “Heralding Our History.”
Every month, we will give one of our local historical societies a slot in our News section to, over the course of four or five Thursdays, present some great stories from the past.
In recognition of the borough’s upcoming 150th anniversary celebration, Ivyland got the month of June.
The Ivyland Heritage Association’s first piece tells the tale of the Temperance House, a hotel that was meant to put the borough on the map as a destination for weary travelers headed to the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
It was not to be, yet, somehow, the borough thrived anyway.
I’m looking forward to the association’s next submission on June 8.
We believe Bucks County has a million stories like that one and we’re excited to work with local historical societies to tell as many of them as we can.
