ACME Screening Room presents PBS documentary

Posted

Join the Acme Screening Room Saturday, May 21, for the documentary “The First 50 Years of U.S. Soviet Relations,” including a post-screening discussion with filmmakers Grace Kennan Warnecke, associate producer, Pam Moskow, associate director and Lambertville, N.J., local, Bill Jersey, director.

A 1985 DuPont Columbia journalism award winner, the documentary is a masterfully edited hour, interweaving rare archival footage with American diplomats who made history negotiating with the Soviets – a judiciously delivered, stimulating history lesson of 50 years between the two superpowers.

The film hosted by American journalist Harrison Salisbury and featuring former Ambassador George Kennan, describes the continuing tensions between the U.S. and Russia and even suggests it could get worse again – as it has. In 1985, Salisbury ominously concluded, “…it is in this relationship that the fate of the world may well depend.”

Special guests for the evening discussion include Grace Kennan Warnecke, daughter of former United States diplomat, George F. Kennan, who has had a lifelong association with Russia and the former Soviet Union. She is formerly Chairman of the Board of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and served as country director for Winrock International in Kyiv, Ukraine, from 1999 to 2003.

In addition to the film and discussion, tickets are also available for a post screening dinner at the Swan Hotel with the guest speakers.
