With help from community members, farmers and local businesses, Rolling Harvest Food Rescue is ramping up efforts to provide nutritious, fresh food to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 2010, Rolling Harvest “has been focused on partnering with local farmers, making it easy for them to share their fresh, healthy produce with the food-insecure communities in which they live,” the nonprofit’s website states. “Our dedicated volunteers help with daily pickup and delivery schedules from 38 farms and food producers, assist with weekly distributions to more than 60 hunger relief sites and glean (harvest) directly from our farm partners’ fields.”
Rolling Harvest also collaborates with other organizations on Fresh Connect Bucks County – free farmers markets for Bucks residents facing hunger. The markets are held weekly in Bristol, Ottsville and Warminster.
With the number of food pantry clients rising due to challenges created by the coronavirus outbreak, community partners are coming together to increase access to fresh, nutrient-dense food.
In addition to Fulper Family Farmstead’s dairy products, Rolling Harvest has recently distributed fresh fruits, vegetables and meat that were either donated or provided at wholesale cost by such businesses and organizations as McCaffrey’s Food Market, Solebury Orchards, Zone 7 and New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger.
“It’s a whole collaboration,” said Rolling Harvest founder and Executive Director Cathy Snyder. “What we are feeling is this extraordinary generosity from people who are already stressed and strapped for time and struggling to meet their customers’ demands. But with this generosity and caring to get so much more of this food into the charitable supply chain, we are in a position to really scale up now.”
Monetary donations are also gratefully appreciated to help Rolling Harvest provide even more healthy food to neighbors in need.
