Peter Slavin took chainsaw to a massive block of ice that was beginning to look a lot like Grundy clock tower while, just a few feet away, Stephen Haines was literally playing with fire.
Haines and Slavin brought the fire and ice, respectively, to Bristol’s Mill Street Fire & Ice Event Friday night but there was more to the evening than the performances of the heat miser and snow miser.
There was Greg Garvey and his smooth acoustic guitar playing. There was a fire pit manned by local Boy Scouts who handed out sticks, marshmallows, chocolates and graham crackers for children with a hankering for s’mores.
There was free hot chocolate for those needing to warm up, but not eager to step too close to the flames.
The free, family-friendly dinnertime event was the first of its kind at Mill Street Crossing and it gave the borough’s bars and restaurants a nice mid-January boost as wait times climbed past the hour mark for a table out of the cold.
