A for Zinder: Golden Hawk is state champ

Posted

Last year, Mikkel Zinder came in third in states after defeating Justin Xu from Conestoga 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation match.

This year, he took home a medal with a different hue.

At the PIAA championships on May 26 and 27 at the Hershey Racquet Club, senior Zinder gutted out a Saturday final win, defeating Central Mountain junior David Lindsay 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) to take home a 3A gold medal.

Council Rock South proudly sent the top two finishers in District One 3A with Zinder and runner-up and classmate Alex Sterin. Sterin won the 2021 District One championship; Zinder is the reigning holder of the last two district titles.

In the first round, Zinder won the first seven sets over Cumberland Valley’s William Ong before Ong retired. Zinder knocked out Dallastown’s Hayden Koons 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals and Saturday play.

Zinder topped Lower Merion junior Brian Yi 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday’s semis to set up the match with Lindsay. Sterin fell to Lindsay in the opening round 6-7(8), 6-0, 6-1.

Zinder has signed a letter of intent with Dayton next year; Sterin has verbaled to Penn State.
