Hunterdon County freeholders okay grant application

Posted
Hunterdon County’s Freeholder Board, at the Aug. 18 meeting, endorsed the Borough of Flemington’s application to the North Jersey Transportation Authority (NJTPA) for a Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grant to assist in the completion of the borough’s streetscape plan in Flemington’s historic downtown.

The Set-Aside program provides federal funds for community-based transportation projects designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of a community.

“If awarded, we are advised that the TA-Set Aside grant funds will go a long way toward helping the borough complete its streetscape plan and could have far reaching implications for the county seat. The project funded through the grant would also make investing in Hunterdon County’s sole designated Opportunity Zone more attractive,” Freeholder Board Director Shaun C. Van Doren stated.

Freeholder Matt Holt, the county’s representative to the NJTPA, said, “The grant process is competitive with many North Jersey communities seeking funds. County support for these grant applications is a key component of the NJTPA’s evaluation of proposals.”

The borough is seeking to complete Phase 2 of its streetscape project which encompasses an area stretching from Bloomfield Avenue north to the site of this historic veteran’s memorial. The infrastructure upgrades sought by Flemington were identified in 2013 Streetscape report that was commissioned by the Flemington Borough Business Improvement District.

The existing disconnected streetscape was identified as one of the major areas requiring improvement to assist local businesses and tourism.

“If there is enough funding, we would also like to extend the streetscape improvement area south to Church Street. We recently received NJ DOT grant money to improve the intersection of Main and Church and that is on schedule for 2021,”said Flemington Mayor Betsy Driver.
