Burn survivor and author Dr. Lise Deguire plans virtual book event

Posted

When she was 4 years old, longtime Bucks County resident Dr. Lise Deguire suffered third-degree burns on two-thirds of her body as the result of both maternal and corporate negligence.

Against all odds, she survived the traumatic event, embarking on a journey of decades of surgeries and treatments to heal her injuries.

In her debut book, “Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor,” Dr. Deguire, a clinical psychologist, shares how she worked through the internal and external pain of her childhood to find a path toward love, health, joy, and life satisfaction.

To celebrate the launch of her book, Commonplace Reader bookstore in Yardley, has teamed up with Dr. Deguire to host a virtual book event at 7 p.m. Oct. 18, which will include a Q&A with Dr. Deguire. Information can be found on the Commonplace Reader website under “events.”

Dr. Deguire credits her survival to finding her strength and resilience, two things many are struggling to find as the pandemic continues.

The fire and its aftermath are only the beginning of this story. Dr. Deguire describes the dysfunctional and tragic world of her family (which included artistic genius, eccentricity, narcissistic and neglectful parents, and four suicides), her formative years spent in the hospital undergoing reconstructive surgeries, as well as her experiences being bullied and socially isolated.

She also shares stories from her adult life: her struggles to find romantic love, becoming a devoted, compassionate parent, and her work as a clinical psychologist.
